Writing - Idioms (Part 6)

Our next stop on the "idiom tour" is going to be food idioms. Take a look at this list (http://www.idiomconnection.com/food.html#A) and find an idiom (or two) that you either don't know or don't know too well. Then, come back on here, post the idiom and its meaning. If you want to challenge yourself a bit more, see if you can correctly use that idiom in a sentence.

I look at the list and find couple of the idioms that I never heard of or seen before for example-
best bib and tucker
-one best clothes
big cheese
- an important person,a leader

I challenge myself on the idiom quiz and I score 14 out 15.

Idioms - as sour as vinegar- sour and disagreable.

The customer was sour as vinegar with the cashier.

Full of beans - to feel energentic or be in high spirit
- The baby was full up beans and did not want to go to bed.

I recieved a score of 11 on 15.

I did not realize there were so many idioms.When I FIRST STARTED DOING THESE BLOGS i DID NOT EVEN KNOW WHAT A IDIOM WAS."tHESE i HAVE NEVER HEARD OF.full of beans:I was full of beans when I went to retake my test.Defenition:to be active,full of energy.carrot and stick:a reward or a punishment depending on ones behavior.I"I use the carrot and stick method with my kids."

1. greatest thing since sliced bread

- the greatest thing that there has ever been

My husband think that his new computer is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

2.go bananas

- to become highly excited, to behave in a crazy way

Every time we have the department meeting, our manager goes bananas.

I have never heard of as busy as popcorn on a skillet which means very active. My son is as busy as popcorn on skillet. On the quiz I got only one wrong.

My two favorite idioms are "as cool as a cucumber"and "as nutty as a fruitcake" food idioms.

Two idions I selected are as follows:

1. "Bring home the bacon" - to earn your family's living.
My father was the only one to bring home the bacon, as my mother was a stay-at-home mom.

2. "Best bib and tucker" - one's best clothes.
I put on my best bib and tucker for the Christmas Banquet.

-THE WARDEN TOOK A CARROT AND STICK APPROACH AGAINST THE NON RULE ABIDING PRISONERS.

2. CUT THE MUSTARD
-SHE COULD NOT CUT THE MUSTARD AT HER NEW JOB.
