Writing - What's Your Purpose?

When you write, you always need to have a clear purpose or reason in mind. Are you trying to be serious and convey facts? Do you want to be persuasive and try to get someone to change his or her opinion? Would you like to be funny and make the reader laugh? No matter what you're trying to do, you always need to know your purpose before you even put your pen (or pencil) to the paper!

In previous blog posts, I've asked you to tell me a story where I gave you some items that you had to include. The story could have been funny, romantic, informative, or even scary. This time, I will give you some items to use, but your goal is to make your writing funny or whimsical. Your events, situations, and characters can all be as outlandish, crazy, or odd as you'd like!

As you write your story, be sure to include the following elements: yellow school bus, three packets of artificial sweetener (such as Splenda or Sweet-n-Low), a lawn chair, and Sam's parakeet named Lucille Ball.

I can't wait to see what you come up with! You've got your purpose, you've got your items, and you're ready to get creative!

I laid in my backyard today to finally soak up some sun. I made a tall glass of ice tea topped with 3 packets of splenda and a slice of lemon. I placed it beside my lawn chair as I slept. I was suddenly awakened by my neighbor Sam's parakeet, Lucille Ball. She screamed so loud that I jumped right up from my sleep and ran smack dab into my closed sliding glass door. I looked around to see who was looking and just when I thought no one saw me, there passing by was a yellow school bus filled with kids pointing and laughing. I laughed too in embarrassment as I slide the door open and went inside.

I stood on the porch to watch the kids get on the yellow school bus, it was so hot I had to get a cool drink of kool aid, it was not sweet enough so, I had to add splenda to quench my taste buds. Later that afternoon,I heard my friend's Sam Parakeet making alot of noise, her name is Lucille Ball.

Lucille Ball the parakeet, was relaxing in a lawn chair having tea with splenda, when all of a sudden he jumped in the yellow school bus and took it for a spin.

My neighbor Sam is an interesting character. He gives me a little chuckle as I watch him through my kitchen window in the morning. He likes to sit in his lawn chair on his frown lawn with this pet parakeet named Lucille Ball on his shoulder. As he watches the kids get on the yellow school bus, he always has a cup of coffee with exactly three packets of splenda. Not a morning goes by where a single detail changes.

Oh no, just two more minutes Jim groaned as his alarm clock rang. With no time to press the snooze button his brother Sam’s parakeet names Lucille Ball began to screeched, “Barrrk,” “get up, get up,” with his masterminding thoughts of taping the birds beak together. Jim thought better of himself and got up at the request of the alarm clock and bird. “Oh man,” he thought “I need three big packs of Splenda in a huge cup of coffee because two packs just won’t do.” Jim was walking down the hallway to the family bathroom, to freshen up. He stepped on his brother’s toy dinosaurs. “Sam, not again,” today before their yellow school bus comes Jim will even the score, with his little brother for all of his troubles. He decided he would wake him with a big surprise splash; Sam was completely soaked in his bed covers. One for me Jim rushes through the halls to the breakfast room. “Mom,” Sam rushes behind him splat across Jim’s head, Sam hits him. You guys stop it you do this every morning.

When I first saw him, he was riding in a yellow bus. I knew something funny was about to happen. First, he pulled out three packets of Splenda from his pocket. I kept on watching his every move. Then he pulled a lawn chair. This is getting interesting. Next thing I know, he brought his pet parakeet, Lucille Ball, to the patio to keep him company. Sure enough, that man was about to have a cook out for just him and his bird.

It was almost the ending of the school year, my daughter and I we were waiting for the school bus, this year the summer start so hot, so I decide to make me a refreshing lemonade with my sweet-n-low, because I have to watch my weight, so I take with me, my lemonade, we sit on the lawn chairs when we wait the bus to come. Unexpectedly, when I turn my head all the way through my glass, there was my neighbor Sam’s parakeet, Lucille Ball drinking my lemonade. The yellow bus arrive and all the students in the bus saw the scene , as a consequence everybody began laughing , I don’t know if it was, because she was drinking from my glass, or for my face in state of shock.

As I lay in my lawn chair, I see the short yellow school bus drop the kids off from school. I wondered why they were on the short bus today. The large bus must have broken down! I shout to Sam "can I borrow three packets of sweet-n-low?" He comes back with my sweetener accompanied by Lucille Ball. No it wasn't a ghost, it’s Sam's pet parakeet. As he gets closer, Lucille jumps on me! With a pecking motion she screeches "mwuah, mwuah, mwuah!" I cried and pleaded "HEEEEEEELLLP!" I thought she was attacking me, only to find out that she was giving me kisses. I was so embarrassed.
