Writing-Political Cartoons

Have you ever heard the term "political cartoon" or seen one of these? With all that's going on in politics right now, I bet you have!

Wikipedia.com defines a political cartoon (sometimes called an editorial cartoon) as an illustration or comic strip containing a political or social message, that usually relates to current events or personalities.

Let's look at an example.

What does that image say to you? Look at the title shown on the image. It says "World Markets." So you know it's dealing with economics. Next, look down the left side. You see negative percentages. The shape that's used (a spiral) is also significant. To me, this political cartoon is expressing that the world markets seem to be in a downward spiral. Isn't that what you've been seeing & reading on the news lately?

Visit this site: http://www.cagle.com/politicalcartoons/. Once you're there, be sure to scroll down to see all of the cartoons. Find one that you can relate to or maybe one that you've read about recently. Then, come back here and tell us about what the cartoon showed and what current event it was related to.

On page two, this cartoon is about passing the bill to extend unemployment benifits. I don't really understand how it would contribute to our unemployment if we don't vote for it, but its an interesting and personal topic for me. The picture is funny and i agree. If it is extended, those people will just continue to relax and take advantage of it(not all people of course). Just my opinion!

The title of this cartoon is OBAMA ANNOUNCES NEW SPACE INITIATIVE
Here you can see him on the podium looking like “ALIEN,” next to a NASA capsule. He is talking to the audience telling them “Live long and prosper,” the people are telling each others, See? I told you Obama isn’t really a U.S. citizen?

Meaning: NASA is not facing budget cuts. In fact, from the federal budget outlined by Obama’s administration, NASA will be receiving an $18.7 billion base budget in 2010, a huge 5% increase over its 2009 budget; also it is set to receive a considerable amount of extra funding from the economic stimulus over the next few years. All this money is going to be use in the Orion CEV (Crew Exploration Vehicle) as the Space Shuttle's replacement for the foreseeable future. The economic is not ok jet, but the government is using lot money in this project, which is why the cartoon says to you he is an alien, he doesn’t care about others institutions that are really in trouble with their budgets.

The cartoon I selected is, Then MAD, Now DEMENTED.

I perceived that the cartoon conteplicts the story of: while the democrats and republican are arguing over who knows best for the country. The world is in the middle of a nuclear war, and the other side is winning.

The cartoon I chose is about Obama and the NASA program. I like this political cartoon a lot because I am very interested in the NASA program and I think that there should be a bigger budget for space exploration.

I think that the meaning of this cartoon is that since NASA already faced a lot of budget cuts, President Obama decided to increase the federal budget to give NASA more funding for space exploration purposes. Since the government is using a lot of money for the Orien program, it is implied that Obama is ignoring the other needy subjects that could use serious funding.

I chose the political cartoon teachers and their grades. It showed the past and present years of school. Also, it had the same terrible grades for both. I think teachers should be given raises for all their hardwork teaching. If it wasn't for them we would not be where we are today. The people today, forgot we went to school to learn. I would recommend teachers deserve a raise because the economy is making changes, which will result us to learning us new things.

The Evolution of a Good Samaritan.

The guy looks down at a man lying on the ground with no concern.

He plays a game where someone needs help with no second thoughts.

Good Samaritans rarely exists these days. However, the person who steps in to help someone else ends up being the one severely hurt, if not dead!
