Vocabulary - Use it or Lose It

Look at a set of vocabulary terms (with meanings).


apparel- clothing
beseige- blockade
compress- shrink
denounce- to condemn openly
dispatch- report, kill
douse- soak
expressly- plainly
famished- starving
forsake- to give up, to leave
gainful- profitable
immense- very large or great
inept- totally without skill
ingenious- imaginative
instantaneous- done in an instant
irk- to annoy

Which words did you already know? Which 2-3 words did you not know that well (prior to this activity)? Please post those words with their meanings. Then, challenge yourself to use two of them in a correctly written sentence!

Douse-to plunge into water or the like; drench
Besiege-to crowd around; crowd in upon

1.He will denounce the man to the authorities.

Inept- Everyone who applied for the position were inept.

Ingenious - My five year old niece is very ingenious.

Ingenious- means being imaginative.

Besiege- Means to crowd around.

Irk- Means to annoy

1.It irks me when my sister leaves a a drop of milk in the carton.

2. My nephew is being such ingenious when he's by his self.

Indept - lacking in fitness or aptitude (unfit)

Irk - to make weary, irritated, or annoyed.

_INGENIOUS- imaginative, cleverness or originality of invention or contraction.

-He is one of those students that have an ingenious type of mind state.


_IRK- to annoy, to irritate

- I felt as if she didn’t come to the party to celebrate only to irk every with her drama.


_DOUSE- soaks up, or to plunge or be plunged into a liquid.

-After the flood we had to douse up the water with buckets.

The words I already knew are famished, apparel and irk. The words I did not know were inept, douse and compress.
inept- totally without skill
douse- soak

1. I doused my dog with water on a hot day.
2. I compressed the size of the picture to fit the page.

In World War Two many Americans were tortured and beseiged by the Vietnam.

2. inept- totally without skill

I was inept in math because it isnt my favorite subject but I have learned to like it.

3. douse- soak

I was outside doing my homework and the rain doused my assignment I was working on.
