Back to Blogging!

Gosh, it's been a while since there was a new blog topic. (I apologize about that!) Actually, part of what kept me away was a GED conference. However, I came away with some great ideas on things that I can use as blog topics.

Did you know that one of the most missed language arts questions on the GED test deals with subject-verb agreement? Problems with subject-verb agreement can impact you negatively on both the multiple choice section and the actual essay part. Don't let something give you double deductions!

Try this short Quia game & see how you do on some questions for subject-verb agreement. Then come back here & post your results. After that, write 2 more sentences telling me if you feel comfortable with this topic. Be sure you have correct subject-verb agreement in your sentences!

I thought it was easy until the end when I missed 2. One of the sentences did not sound right. The one that says, "They _______ us their best friends". The option words were, "is" or "are". I left it blank because it does not make sense to me. Is that a proper sentence.

The sentences were easy once I understood singular subjects must have singular verbs. It also went on and say singular verbs have an S at the end of the verbs. I received a 100%.

I have two children attending Broward School.

My friend is coming from New York today.

Tierra, it is possible to find mistakes in the activities. It sounds to me like that was the case with that sentence on your activity. I bet it should have been like this: "They ____ their best friends." If that was it, would you go with "is" or "are" for the verb?

Julissa, here's some help with the ones you asked about.

1. The breeze seems or seem cooler this evening. Which one is correct seem or seems? The verb is "breeze" which is singular. So the verb must be "seems" to have agreement. (HINT: If you're unsure, give yourself another subject that is also singular, such as "cat." Would you say "The cat seem to be acting funny" or does that sound wrong? I bet it sounds wrong and that is wrong! It should be like this: "The cat seems to be acting funny." That is correct for subject-verb agreement.2. Your friends have or haves gone home by now.Which one is correct have or haves? There is no case where the verb "haves" would be used. You would always use the following formats:
a.) I have...
b.) You have...
c.) He/she/it has...
d.) They have...
e.) We have...
f.) No one has...

Does that help? I hope so!

Oh okay. The word would be "are".

I played the quia game and out of 15, i got 11 correct. I dont know if its just me or if everyone noticed this, but I think some of the questions were not worded correctly! I felt comfortable with this topic(even though i had some mistakes), but I am willing to try it again.

I went to the site and did the exercise. I got two incorrect.

Sometimes I am not sure what is the subject. Can you give me some suggestions on how to identify the subject?.

All my answers were correct. I find the subject verb agreement difficult when writing an essay. I tried to have someone else proof read what I have written before submitting it.
